Mill bearing lubrication system
An Egyptian cement company’s mill bearings were experiencing significant circulating oil leakage, resulting in production losses, high oil consumption and contamination of the lubrication system while using a circulating oil. These factors resulted in shortened bearing life, and the oil leakage exposed personnel to health and safety hazards. To improve mill bearing reliability, the company reached out to ExxonMobil for a lubricant solution capable of mitigating leaks.
ExxonMobil engineers ran EHL calculations and recommended changing the lubricant and method of lubrication from oil to Mobilith SHC™ 460 synthetic grease. Formulated with a synthetic base oil and lithium complex thickener, Mobilith SHC 460 provides excellent adhesion, structural stability and resistance to water.
After transitioning to Mobilith SHC 460, the company was able to mitigate leaks, which helped reduce downtime due to bearing failures and repairs, as well as oil consumption. The grease solution enabled a reduction in circulating oil system maintenance, including the destructive effects of the oil leakage on the mill foundations. In addition, the plant eliminated safety and housekeeping issues with oil leakage on the surrounding flooring. These benefits resulted in company-estimated total savings of more than US $1,000,000 per year.
